As the camps of the Civilian
Conservation Corps sprouted up all across America, unprecedented construction of parks and recreational areas set the
tone that began America’s love affair with outdoor recreation.
As the depression ebbed away and economic recovery began to
lighten the spirits of
America’s citizens, parks, picnic areas, and hiking trails beckoned
families to discover the beauty of our nation’s natural resources.
From 1933-1942, nearly 800 state
parks were built creating the infrastructure for the state park
systems. In
2006 Virginia
celebrated the 70th anniversary of the State Park system.
Begun in 1936, the first six camps were built by the CCC and by
2001 they progressed to achieve the National Gold Medal Award for
Excellence. There are now
34 state operated parks that chronicle Virginia’s history and naturals resources.

To
join the effort to support a Virginia park near you:
Virginia
has not forgotten its roots. Read
about the youth corps programs in the state park system.
- Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) - A
residential program for young people who work and live in the
state parks (corps sites) for about three weeks
- Youth Service Corps (YSC) - A
nonresident day program that focuses on “at risk” and
court-monitored young people.
- Youth Development Corps (YDC) - A
weekend program that runs from Friday evening to Sunday noon. (The
program is still being developed.)
Visit the state parks
in your area and explore their CCC history.
